MP OBTAINS FIGURES FOR LOW PAY IN THE BORDERS

2.58.12pm GMT Tue 12th Feb 2008

Local MP Michael Moore has tabled parliamentary questions to obtain the latest statistics for low pay in the Borders and the rest of Scotland.

Mr Moore tabled the questions on behalf of the Scottish Low Pay Unit. He is now in discussions with them about the trends that are shown by these figures, which will form the basis of a report to be published in the near future.

Mr Moore has a long track record in working closely with the Low Pay Unit to help them obtain up-to-date information from the Office of National Statistics on average earnings in each local authority area in Scotland.

Speaking after he obtained the statistics, Mr Moore said:

"Low pay remains a serious issue in the Borders and I am therefore pleased to continue my long-standing co-operation with the Scottish Low Pay Unit. It is vital that we learn more about the reality of low pay in the region and elsewhere in the country."
