HUME - GALASHIELS LIBDEM ENCOURAGES APPLICATIONS TO SCOTTISH BORDERS AWARDS

11.09.37am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 5th May 2008

Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Galashiels, has today welcomed news that the Scottish Borders Awards are now open for applications and has encouraged Gala based groups to apply.

Councillor Hume said:-

"Just by having the Scottish Borders Awards is a chance showcase the best in the Borders. It's a recognition of the achievements of businesses, individuals and community groups as well as being an opportunity to highlight how each of these groups contribute to the success of the Scottish Borders as a whole.

"The New Ways Community Planning Partnership is looking for applications from individuals and organisations of all shapes and sizes that have in the last year been successful in their own line of work or activity, and have had a positive impact on the Scottish Borders.

The Councillor continued:-

"Last year two Galashiels based groups - Borderline Helpline and Youth Chex - won two categories and many of the runners up were from Gala, a clear indication of the sheer hard work, dedication and enterprise going on in the town at grass roots level.

"I'm sure that Galashiels will be able to offer nominations to this year's Awards and I would urge anyone to apply."
