LOCAL MP ENCOURAGES BORDERS VILLAGES TO APPLY FOR 'VILLAGE OF THE YEAR' AWARDS

11.09.06am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 24th May 2008

Local MP Michael Moore is encouraging community councils in the Borders to apply for new 'Village of the Year' awards.

The awards, which are being organised by Calor Gas, are aimed at rewarding vibrant rural communities that have populations of up to 5,000. Prizes of up to £4,000 will be given to communities that have, irrespective of size, made the best of local opportunities to maintain and enhance the quality of life for villagers.

Four aspects of rural life will be assessed: people, environment, business and communications. The deadline for applications is 31 May 2008 and applicants enter by answering the following question: "what makes your community a special place?"

Commenting on the awards, Mr Moore said:

"I know from first-hand experience that our villages enjoy a real sense of community spirit. When I'm holding my surgeries in village halls and community centres, I always take a look at the notice board, and I am frequently astounded at the range and diversity of activities that are put on by and for local people.

"I am therefore confident that any Borders village which enters the competition will stand a very strong chance of winning, and I would encourage all our community councils to consider entering."

The village chosen as the regional winner for southern Scotland will receive an award of £1,000, and the national winner for Scotland will receive an additional £3,000.

Further information on the Scottish Calor Village of the Year awards can be obtained from Michael Moore's parliamentary office at 01896 663 653 or on the internet at: www.villageoftheyear.org/scotland.
